WHY INSTALL A CEILING FAN?
One reason ceiling fans are a great fixture for any home or business is because they are incredibly multi-functional. First of all, they are a powerful way of cooling your room on a hot day or evening. On top of that, they are far more energy-efficient than an air conditioning system.
However, ceiling fans can also be a great design piece that can transform any space, from bedrooms to living rooms and even office spaces.
Many ceiling fans also come with a light, making them a great option for your room’s ambient lighting source.
HELPFUL GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE CEILING FAN
One of the most common places that people get tripped up when they are shopping for ceiling fans has to do with size.
After all, if you purchase one that is too small for your room, you won’t receive adequate cooling, and your room will look awkwardly large in comparison. The opposite is true if you get a fan that’s too large.
So here’s something helpful to keep in mind. Ceiling fans don’t so much cool rooms as they do people. The fan’s rotation pushes cool air down. This makes the sweat on your skin evaporate and causes you to feel cooler.
Conversely, you can reverse the direction of your ceiling fan during the colder months to push down warm air that may be trapped near the ceiling.
With that being said, you want a ceiling fan that’s adequately sized to ensure your cooling (or heating) needs are met.
The first thing to do before even shopping for specific designs or styles of ceiling fans is size up your room. This means getting out a tape measure and getting to work.
CEILING FAN HEIGHT GUIDELINES
Generally speaking, you want the blades of your ceiling fan to be around eight feet above above the ground below it. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but for safety reasons.
As a side note, it’s important to consider what else you are going to place in the room. For example, if you are considering a ceiling fan for your kids’ rooms and they have a bunk bed, you’ll want to consider placing your ceiling fan in a place where your child won’t get their head caught in the spinning blades.
Additionally, you can also install a downrod for your ceiling fan. Downrods increase the distance between the ceiling and the fan itself. Downrods are a great option for especially high ceilings as they’ll place the fan in a position for optimal airflow and aesthetic value.
However, they can be applied to lower ceilings as well. Here are some additional measurement guidelines for using a downrod:
- For ceilings that are 10 feet high, opt for a 12-inch downrod
- For ceilings that are 12 feet high, opt for a 24-inch downrod
- For ceilings that are 14 feet high, opt for a 36-inch downrod
- For ceilings that are 16 feet high, opt for a 48-inch downrod
- For ceilings that are 18 feet high, opt for a 60-inch downrod
- For ceilings that are 20 feet high, opt for a 72-inch downrod
When choosing downrod mounting, it’s important to ensure you purchase a sufficient amount of wire to account for the length of your downrod. Otherwise, you won’t be able to connect the fan to its power source.
CEILING FAN BLADE SIZE GUIDELINES
Ceiling fans are primarily measured from blade tip to blade tip. This is relatively easy to determine if you have a fan with an even number of blades; simply measure from one end to the other.
However, if your fan has an odd number of blades, measure from the fan’s center to the tip of one blade and multiply the number by two.
While preference and a specific room’s interior design are the largest factors, here are some measurements that design experts generally agree on:
- Rooms that 75 square feet or less should have a 29-36 inch fan size
- Rooms that are 76 – 144 square feet should have a 36 – 44 inch fan size
- Rooms that are 144 – 225 square feet should have a 44 – 54 inch fan size
- Rooms that are 225 – 400 square feet should have a 50 – 72 inch fan size
- Rooms that are bigger than 400 square feet should have 54 – 72 inch fan size
On top of that, 400+ square feet rooms would benefit from multiple ceiling fans.
Choosing the right size ceiling fan from the beginning will not only keep your room adequately cooled, but you’ll also save money on repairs in the long run because you won’t need to run an undersized fan at max speed and put excess stress on the motor.
